What is Karma

KARMA is a Sanskrit word and is derived from the root 'kr' which means 'to act' or 'to do'.

Karma is the sum of one's actions and their consequences from his/her past, present and future lives.

Newton's Third Law of Motion is the modern equivalent of the Universal Law of Karma:

  •  “If one object exerts a force on another object, then the other object exerts an equal and opposite force on the first object”.

  •  "For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction".

Types of Karma:

Sanchit (stored) Karma -

It is a total sum of all the good and bad karma from all of our past lives. Every moment of our life, we are adding or reducing our Sanchit karma depending on our actions. The results of Sanchit karma are awaiting to be completed in this life OR in the future lives. Until this Sanchit karma is zero, we will have to take birth again and again (based on Hindu philosophy).

Think of Sanchit karma as your store of karma. Not all fruit on the tree will mature the same day, and not all bushes or trees bring fruits every single year.

There is something unique about Sanchit karma - it can be changed! If you can go to the source of your apples or wild berries, you can choose to nurture them or destroy them altogether. The key is going to the source.

Prarabdha (matured) Karma -

Prārabdha is that which has matured. Imagine a fruit on a tree. It has come of age, and it is ripe. Either it is picked in time, or it detaches itself from the tree and lands on the ground. It cannot remain on the tree forever. Similarly, Prārabdha is ripe karma. At some point in time, you planted a tree, and the fruit is ready to drop today. Regardless of your desire or your preference, it has taken its course, much like the arrow that has left the bow. It cannot be changed.

Once you perform any karmic act, it is registered in the universe, and it will come to fruition in due course. There is no escape. Whatever you are going through in life presently, that you have no control over, it is your Prārabdha.

Agami (forthcoming) Karma -

The consequence of the present action (in the form of an impression) on the future. This refers to the Karma that is being created by your current actions, which will affect your future. Agami is the Karma generated in this life that will bear fruit in future lifetimes.

Kriyamana (present, actionable) Karma -

Refers more specifically to the instantaneous or immediate consequences of your actions. It emphasizes the cause-and-effect relationship between your actions and their immediate results.

Jyotish and Karma

In Vedic Astrology, planetary positions and nakshatras (star constellations) act as mirrors of an individual’s Karmic patterns. The most karmic planets are Saturn, Rahu and Ketu.

  • Saturn (Shani): Often signifies karmic challenges, responsibilities, and lessons (usually hard ones) linked to past and present actions.
  • Rahu and Ketu: These shadow planets are associated with karmic debts and liberation. Rahu may highlight desires that stem from unfulfilled past experiences, while Ketu emphasizes spiritual growth and detachment from everything material.
